Role of the thyroid:
The thyroid is a very small gland, but it is quite important for our health. The two hormones secreted by the thyroid, T3 and T4, help to maintain body temperature, heart rate, as well as how it uses energy that we get from our food. TSH, produced by the pituitary gland which regulates the other endocrine glands within the body, helps to maintain stable levels of these hormones within the body.
Symptoms to watch out for:
Hyperthyroidism: Decrease or increase in Appetite change (decrease or increase), Fatigue, difficulty sleeping (insomnia), Frequent bowel movements, Heart palpitations, Increased sweating, Irritability, Tremors, Vision change, Weight loss/gain, Thinning of hair, Itching and hives, Fertility problems, Shortness of breath, Dizziness.
Hypothyroidism: Fatigue, Increased sensitivity to cold, Constipation, Dry skin, Weight gain, Muscle/ joint weakness, High blood cholesterol, Thinning hair, Slowed heart rate, Depression, Impaired memory, Enlarged thyroid
